Synopsis
As Jabalpur, a second-tier city in median India, reshapes itself in the name of progress, its lakes, once lifelines for a tight-knit fishing community, begin to disappear. Nitish, a restless young man from the community, drifts between inherited routines and the lure of quick success, spending his days chasing government jobs with his friend Guru, in a city where upward mobility often depends on sycophancy within rigid hierarchies.
While the world around them shifts, Nitish's father, an ageing fisherman, remains steady and silent, and keeps returning to the lake. Things take a sharper turn when the municipal corporation shuts down fish farming as part of the city’s urban beautification drive. Tensions rise within the fishing committee, especially between those seeking negotiation and others, like Neeraj, whose fiery activism unsettles the fragile unity.
Somewhere between the promise of development and the residue of forgotten livelihoods, the day moves in fragments, with half-signed forms, half-spoken thoughts, and half-mended nets. Life continues, stubborn, cynical, and laced with dry humour.
Borrowing its title from a hopeful folk song about catching a golden fish, Phas Gayi Jal Machri floats between satire and realism, capturing the quiet erosion of a community and the uncertain tides of change.

Milestones Reached and the Road Ahead
We are incredibly proud to have completed the principal shoot of Phas Gayi Jal Machri. Despite working with limited resources, we’ve made significant progress in the production, covering critical expenses like location rent, permits, partial cast and crew payments, equipment rental, art design, and travel/accommodation.

However, as we move forward, we seek additional support to complete the post-production, which includes sound design and mixing, music, colour grading (DI), and DCP export.
Be Part of Phas Gayi Jal Machri’s Journey
We invite you to join us in bringing Phas Gayi Jal Machri to life. This project is about more than just making a film—it’s about telling a story that would otherwise go unheard. We welcome conversations with potential financiers and co-producers to help us preserve the authenticity of this narrative that is as visually striking as it is thought-provoking.
